North Rim Firing Range — The Same Closure, a Thinner Record

The short version

• The North Rim Range and Range Road are closed to public use, access, and presence under 36 CFR § 1.5(a)(2), per the current Superintendent’s Compendium.

What the compendium says

Grand Canyon’s North Rim District gets its own version of the same closure that covers the South Rim. Item 33 of the current Superintendent’s Compendium:

“North Rim Range and Range Road - Closed to Public / Restricted Area: Public use, access and presence on the North Rim Range Road are prohibited. 36 CFR § 1.5 (a)(2)”

The park’s reasoning, in the compendium’s own words, is the same sentence used for the South Rim range: “Firearms training and qualifications can occur at any time of day or night. This closure protects the public from exposure to projectiles.” Two ranges, two districts, one identical rule — which suggests this is a standard NPS approach to any active range inside a park boundary, not something specific to one location’s history.

There’s a second, separate restriction layered on top of the firearms closure. Elsewhere in the compendium, in the North Rim’s backcountry camping rules, the range and its road are flagged again: “The North Rim Range and Range Road are along the utility corridor and are closed to camping.” That’s a different hazard logic — utility corridors get kept clear for maintenance access and infrastructure protection, the same reasoning that closes camping along other North Rim utility routes nearby. The range picks up both restrictions because it happens to sit on both kinds of ground.

Why this page is shorter

The South Rim Range benefits from a deep public record about what Grand Canyon’s law enforcement rangers actually do — call volumes, training pipelines, division mission statements — because the South Rim is where most of that written history and reporting concentrates. None of it is North Rim-specific. Searching for anything unique to the North Rim range itself — when it was built, how it differs operationally from the South Rim site, how often it’s used — turned up nothing beyond the compendium’s bare closure notice.

That’s a legitimate result, not a failure of research. The North Rim range is real, it’s closed for the same documented reason as its South Rim counterpart, and the honest version of this page is short: here’s what’s public, and here’s what isn’t published anywhere NPS makes available.

What’s actually off-limits (and why)

Public use, access, and presence on the North Rim Range and its access road are prohibited outright — not scheduled around active training hours, but closed at all times, because training can happen at any hour without advance notice to the public. As with the South Rim range, this dossier doesn’t include the range’s location, access route, or any equipment detail; that’s consistent with both NPS’s own public description (function and hazard only) and this project’s rule against publishing routes into closed areas.
